Team Fishel Kicks Off Joint Trench Project is Tustin, CA

After 60 years in operation, Marine Corps. Air Station (MCAS-Tustin) officially closed on July 3, 1999 in accordance with the Base Realignment and Closure Act. The local community did not object to the closing and immediately began plans for redevelopment.

Located approximately two miles from Team Fishel's office in Irvine, California, 70 percent of these 1600 acres will be set aside for retail, professional and corporate facilities. The remaining 30 percent will be developed into homes, schools and recreation areas. The city’s goal is to create a ‘city within a city’ and have titled the project The District at Tustin Legacy.
In September, Team Fishel officially kicked off the Tustin project, a $4.5 million project involving the installation of 31,000 feet of joint trench including electric, telephone and city-owned conduit duct systems.

Part of the project is located in an area labeled as environmentally hazardous, which requires special procedures for excavation and exportation of the contaminated soil. California Teammates attended a special 40-hour HAZWOPER (Hazard Waste Operations) training class and obtained certification to work at this site.
While the project is proceeding according to schedule, California Area Manager Mark Brady acknowledges that working alongside other trades has been challenging. "We've had to do some rescheduling and working around other contractors," Brady said. "Clear communication, following up and having a 'Plan B' has helped overcome these obstacles."

Division Manager Sal Padula compiled a well skilled team of seasoned joint trench experts and assigned them with the challenge.

Project Manager Bob McKinley and Foremen Dane Pennington and Shawn Conaway are heading up this project with 10 Teammates on two crews, using primarily John Deere 410 backhoes and wheel loaders.

The project is scheduled to be completed in February 2007.
